Yes or No
Either yes or no be what you say.
Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.
All the glory, praises and honor be to the Holy Father in Jesus’ precious name !
The context of the subject verse from the gospel according to Matthew revolves around vows that we make. In fact, the verses from 33 to 37 of the subject chapter are the Lord’s teaching about vows. The Bible says according to Numbers 30:2, not to break any vows that we make to the Almighty God. But shall do according to the word that was vowed.
If a man vows a vow to the Lord , or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.
Numbers 30:2 ESV
Do not take the Lord’s name in vain
Coming to the Lord’s teaching, He asks us not to make any vows. Neither shall we make any vow by heaven, by earth, by Jerusalem or by our own head. It is common for some to make a vow by their parents, by their children or by whomsoever is dear to them. A vow is normally a promise to do something or not to do something. And I believe, most of the vows are done in hastiness, either to gain something or to get out from some unexpected troubles. At the point of making an vow, a person might genuinely display his/her seriousness for the fulfillment of the vow. But may not show the same seriousness in executing the promise after few days. Moreover, we shall not take the name of the Lord in vain. For it is breaking the commandment of God as the following verse says:
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
Exodus 20:7 ESV
As our Lord has asked, let us be clear in dealing with the people. Let us be truthful to God first and accordingly say either yes or no. And anything more than that is deadly for us. For the Lord himself has revealed to us that it is evil. Therefore, let us not get influenced by the devil to make it something which should not be. In Jesus’ matchless name alone, let us all be truthful in all our words and deeds. Amen.
