I Commit My Spirit

I commit my spirit, O Lord.

Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord , faithful God.

The subject verse from the book of Psalms seems familiar to the words spoken by our Lord Jesus on the cross. To be precise, the first part of the verse resembles what Jesus expressed while on the verge of his earthly life. It shows Jesus’ obedience to the Heavenly Father to the last minute. Although these were Jesus’ final words, the psalmists words were from a different context. History says that many of the prominent people spoke the same words while leaving for their final abode. These were some of those who expressed the final words of Jesus in their last moments: Polycarp, Bernard, Huss, Henry V., Jerome of Prague, Luther, Melancthon and many others.

Safe in the hands of the Omnipotent God

From both the contexts we could make out that all things are safe in the hands of the Omnipotent God. Our Lord did what was in the will of the Heavenly Father. He proceeded in accordance to the divine plan i.e., submitting his soul into his Father’s hands. While the psalmist put all of his confidence on the Almighty God, for he believed that he would be delivered from all the dangers and troubles. Certainly, this act of the psalmist was not at the end of his earthly journey, but in his active life. And the redemption that the psalmist speaks is not of the sins but of the past dangers and hurdles from which he was delivered.

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

Psalms 91:1 NIV

Unquestionably, our God is a faithful God. As we see from all the above, we are all safe in His mighty hands. As the above verse says, we should safely dwell in the shelter of the God Most High. Therefore, let us fully surrender to our Lord Jesus who is the only Redeemer of the humanity. When He is in us, we seek to live our lives in accordance with the Father’s plans and will. In Jesus’ precious name stay safe and sound. Amen and Amen.
