Tame the Tongue

No one can tame the tongue.

But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.

Beloved in Christ, warm wishes and greetings!

The above verse (James 3:8) is about the tongue, which is one of the most important, out of all organs of speech. The scriptures are very clear of this organ which seems more of an uncontrollable one. As the above verse declares, it cannot be tamed by anyone. Moreover, the author of the verse outrightly put forth it as a restless evil and full of deadly poison. Yes, we can all be very sure to say that the tongue is a restless evil. As the following verse says, it seems man easily lets unwholesome talk out of their mouths.

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Ephesians 4:29 NIV

Throughout the Bible, there are many verses with respect to the tongue and its weaknesses. Many of the verses warn of very bad consequences because of improper usage of tongue. Surprisingly, this small organ, tongue has the power of life and death in it. As the verse below says, those who love it, certainly reap its fruit in the same way as they applied. Even it is said that a soothing tongue is a tree of life, but an uncontrollable one crushes the spirit.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

Proverbs 18:21 NIV

The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.

Proverbs 15:4 NIV

Set a guard

Therefore beloved, let us keep our tongue in control and use words with restraint. Moreover, recklessly never allow our words to pierce like swords. But let our tongue be used like the wise, to be graceful and bring healing to others. Finally as the Psalmist asked the Lord, let us also ask the Almighty to set a guard over our mouth. And He alone can tame our tongue and make it as a life giving one in Jesus’ matchless name.

Set a guard over my mouth, Lord ; keep watch over the door of my lips.

Psalm 141:3 NIV

Amen.
